BAKED ITALIAN MEATBALLS

These are really tasty and I love that they are baked in the oven rather than pan-fried. I found this recipe in Cooking light originally and have made them several times with great success. They freeze well after cooking - I just thaw them and add them to simmering sauce for a great spaghetti dinner on busy nights.

Tips:

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Using fresh ingredients, especially for the meat, breadcrumbs, and herbs, will result in tastier meatballs.
  • Choose the Right Meat: A combination of ground beef and pork is often used, but you can also use all beef or all pork. Look for meat with a good fat content (around 20%) for juicy meatballs.
  • Season Liberally: Don't be shy with the seasonings. A good balance of Italian herbs, garlic, and parmesan cheese is essential.
  • Handle the Meatball Mixture Gently: Overworking the meat mixture can result in tough meatballs. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Shape the Meatballs Evenly: This will help ensure even cooking.
  • Use a Nonstick Skillet: This will prevent the meatballs from sticking and breaking apart.
  • Brown the Meatballs Before Baking: Browning the meatballs in a skillet before baking adds flavor and helps keep them moist.
  • Use a Baking Dish with Sides: This will prevent the sauce from boiling over.
  • Bake the Meatballs at a High Temperature: This will help lock in the juices and prevent them from drying out.
  • Baste the Meatballs with Sauce: Basting the meatballs with sauce while they bake will keep them moist and flavorful.
  • Let the Meatballs Rest Before Serving: This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meatballs, making them even more tender.

Conclusion:

These baked Italian meatballs are a delicious and versatile dish that can be served as an appetizer, main course, or party food. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can make meatballs that are moist, flavorful, and sure to impress your friends and family. So next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give these baked Italian meatballs a try!
