Tips:

  • Choose the right fish: Use a firm-fleshed fish like carp, pike, or whitefish. Fresh or frozen fish can be used, but if using frozen fish, thaw it completely before cooking.
  • Grind the fish finely: Use a food processor or meat grinder to grind the fish until it is very fine. This will help the fishcakes to hold together better.
  • Season the fish mixture well: Add plenty of herbs, spices, and vegetables to the fish mixture to flavor it. Some popular additions include onions, carrots, celery, parsley, dill, and lemon zest.
  • Chill the fish mixture before cooking: This will help the fishcakes to hold their shape better. Chill the mixture for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  • Form the fishcakes into patties: Use your hands to form the fish mixture into patties that are about 2 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. Be gentle when forming the patties, so that they don't break apart.
  • Cook the fishcakes over medium heat: Cook the fishcakes in a pan over medium heat until they are golden brown and cooked through. This will take about 5-7 minutes per side.
  • Serve the fishcakes hot: Serve the fishcakes hot with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a salad.
