EASY BAKED HAM

Easy Baked Ham image

My family does this every year with our Christmas Eve ham and it never fails to be anything but delicious!

Provided by BCORTE

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Pork     Ham     Whole

Time 1h

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 (4 pound) fully-cooked spiral cut ham
1 (20 ounce) can sliced pineapple, drained with juice reserved
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 liter ginger ale

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Remove as much of the ham from the bone as you can. Layer one third of the ham in the bottom of a 6 quart casserole dish. Top with a few pineapple rings and 1/4 of the brown sugar. Repeat the layers, ending with pineapple rings on top, but don't sprinkle the last 1/4 of brown sugar.
  • Pour any juice left in the pineapple can over the ham. Then pour in enough of the ginger ale to fill the dish about half way. Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar over the top.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover and cook for an additional 20 minutes.

Nutrition Facts : Calories 425 calories, Carbohydrate 34.3 g, Cholesterol 74.1 mg, Fat 20.1 g, Fiber 0.4 g, Protein 25.8 g, SaturatedFat 7.2 g, Sodium 1438.6 mg, Sugar 33.3 g

Tips:

  • Choosing the right ham: Select a fully cooked ham, preferably one that is spiral-cut for even cooking and easier slicing. Ham weight should be between 10 to 15 pounds.
  • Preparing the ham: Remove the packaging and place the ham in a large roasting pan. Score the fat cap of the ham in a diamond pattern to help the glaze penetrate.
  • Making the glaze: Combine balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, and spices in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook until the glaze thickens slightly.
  • Basting the ham: Brush the glaze onto the ham every 15-20 minutes during the baking process. This helps create a flavorful and caramelized crust.
  • Cooking temperature and time: Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Bake the ham for approximately 15-20 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C).

Conclusion:

Baked ham with balsamic brown sugar glaze is a classic dish that combines sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. It's perfect for special occasions or holiday gatherings. By following these tips, you can ensure that your baked ham turns out juicy, tender, and flavorful every time. Remember to choose a high-quality ham, prepare it properly, and baste it frequently during the baking process. With a little effort, you'll have a delicious and impressive main course that will wow your guests.
