CLASSIC CANDIED YAMS RECIPE

Classic Candied Yams Recipe image

Candied yams are a classic Southern side dish, especially when it comes to Thanksgiving. Even though Mama makes the same sweet potato casserole every year, she won't be offended if you bring these candied yams once she tries them. Lightly spiced and oh-so-sweet, these candied yams will become a mainstay in your Thanksgiving recipe lineup. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla combine with sweet potatoes for the most comforting holiday dish you can serve. One of the best parts about this side dish is that it only has 20 minutes of hands-on time, and you can assemble the dish up to 3 days in advance. Make the recipe through step 3, store it covered in the refrigerator, then bake it Thanksgiving Day. With all the other dishes you have to worry about on Thanksgiving, these candied yams will be a breeze. We recommend serving them straight from the oven while the syrup is still hot.

Time 40m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 (40 ounce) cans yams
1 cup brown sugar
4 teaspoons butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • Pour can of Yams in a casserole (or oven safe cookware).
  • Drain and save 1/2 cup of liquid and pour back into yams.
  • Sprinkle Yams with Brown Sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and mix well.
  • Pat Butter on top.
  • Place in preheated 350' oven for 30-35 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right yams: Look for firm, plump yams with smooth, blemish-free skin. Avoid yams that are soft or have bruises or cuts.
  • Wash and peel the yams thoroughly: Scrub the yams under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Then, use a sharp knife to peel the yams, being careful not to remove too much of the flesh.
  • Cut the yams into even-sized pieces: This will help them cook evenly. If the yams are large, you may need to cut them into quarters or even smaller pieces.
  • Soak the yams in cold water for at least 30 minutes: This will help to remove some of the starch from the yams and prevent them from becoming too sticky.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed baking dish: This will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the yams from burning.
  • Bake the yams in a preheated oven: This will help them to cook evenly and prevent them from becoming dry.
  • Baste the yams with the melted butter and brown sugar mixture several times during baking: This will help to create a delicious glaze and prevent the yams from drying out.
  • Serve the yams hot: Candied yams are best served immediately after they are baked, while they are still hot and tender.
