4 slices thick-cut bacon, cut into lardons
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 medium onion, chopped
Three 15-ounce cans navy beans
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Put the bacon in a large, cold cast-iron skillet and cook over medium heat until the fat renders and the bacon is almost crisp, about 8 minutes.
  • Add the apple and onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apple is crisp-tender, about 6 minutes.

2 (15 ounce) cans pork and beans (or boston baked pork & beans)
1 cup diced granny smith apple (about 1/2 of a large apple)
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 slices bacon

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F Coat a 1 1/2-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the bacon and mix well.
  • Pour into the baking dish and lay the raw strips of bacon on top (I cut the bacon into pieces so it will mix in nicely later).
  • Cover and bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until thick and bubbly.
  • Uncover and bake for 5 more minutes.

4 cans (16 ounces each) baked beans
1 can (21 ounces) apple pie filling
1 can (12 ounces) root beer
1 teaspoon ground ancho chile pepper, optional
1 cup shredded smoked cheddar cheese, optional

  • Prepare campfire or grill for medium heat, using 32-36 charcoal briquettes or large wood chips., In a 10-in. Dutch oven, cook bacon over campfire until crisp. Remove; discard drippings. Return bacon to pan; stir in baked beans, pie filling, root beer and, if desired, ancho chili pepper, Cover Dutch oven.
