Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 each Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
⅓ cup water
¼ cup SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 (15 ounce) container refrigerated pie crusts
1 egg white, lightly beaten

Steps:

  • Cook apples and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat, covered, stirring occasionally and breaking up apples with the back of a spoon, 10 to 12 minutes or until apples form a coarse puree. Add SPLENDA® Granulated Sweetener and flour; cook 2 to 3 additional minutes, stirring constantly until SPLENDA® Granulated Sweetener dissolves and mixture is thickened. Stir in cinnamon. Spoon apple mixture into a bowl to cool slightly.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray; set aside.
  • Unroll piecrusts; cut each one into four wedges. Roll each wedge into a 6-inch circle. Place 3 level tablespoons apple mixture on each circle; moisten edges of dough with water and fold dough over to form a half-moon shape. Crimp to seal, and cut vents to release steam. Place on prepared pan; brush tops with egg white.
  • Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until turnovers are browned. Cool turnovers on a wire rack 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

BAKED APPLE TURNOVERS

Baked Apple Turnovers image

OK, so these are not technically apple turnovers, but they really do taste great! A lot easier than dealing with phyllo dough and much healthier. Tortillas paired with the sweet filling work really well when baked. Also, we don't do a lot of sugar in our house--so feel free to increase the sugar to 1/2 cup or more, and omit...

TURNOVERS:
4 flour tortillas
3 large granny smith apples, diced (peeled if you prefer)
1 c chopped or sliced almonds
1/2 c chopped pecans
1/4 c sugar
2 Tbsp agave nectar
stevia to taste
1 Tbsp butter
1/2 lemon, squeezed
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
ICING:
3 Tbsp powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
enough milk to create icing consistency

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat over to 400 degrees.
  • 2. Melt butter in large skillet, then add apples and lemon juice.
  • 3. Cook for 5-7 minutes to tenderize, then add nuts, sugar, agave, stevia, cinnamon, and salt.
  • 4. Continue cooking, adding a few TB of water as needed to make it close to a "pie filling" consistency.
  • 5. Place 1/4 filling mixture onto tortilla and fold in half. Make 4 turnovers and place on greased baking sheet.
  • 6. Spray the tops of turnovers with oil or baste lightly with butter.
  • 7. Bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned.
  • 8. While turnovers are baking, prepare the icing by mixing powdered sugar, vanilla & milk in small bowl.
  • 9. Allow to cool for a few minutes before drizzling icing over the tops. Serve warm.

Tips:

  • For a flakier crust, use a combination of all-purpose flour and butter. You can also use a pre-made pie crust.
  • If you don't have apple pie spice, you can make your own by combining 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice.
  • To make sure the apple turnovers are cooked through, insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, they are done.
  • Serve the apple turnovers warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Conclusion:

Baked apple turnovers are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are also a great way to use up leftover apples. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a delicious and satisfying snack or dessert that the whole family will love.
