CROSBY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SLOPPY JOES--ADAPTED

Crosby Elementary School Sloppy Joes--Adapted image

Crosby Elementary School via the Food Network. These remind me of those I loved as a child--except I do not remember any crunch to those. Thus, I have adapted this recipe to saute the vegetables briefly with the beef. WARNING: These are VERY sweet, so adjust the amount of ketchup and/or brown sugar to moderate that, if desired. If you wish to increase the amount of vegetables, without anyone noticing :-) you can, as I did, add a few tablespoons of finely diced eggplant to the vegetables when sauteing them.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: Use lean ground beef (85% lean or higher) to reduce the amount of grease in the sloppy joes. You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a healthier option.
  • Brown the meat thoroughly: This will help to develop the flavor of the sloppy joes. Make sure to break up the meat as it cooks so that it cooks evenly.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is what really makes the sloppy joes. Be sure to use a sauce that you enjoy the taste of. You can use a store-bought sauce or make your own. There are many different recipes available online.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables add flavor and nutrients to the sloppy joes. You can add any vegetables that you like, but some good options include onions, peppers, celery, and carrots.
  • Use good quality buns: The buns are an important part of the sloppy joes. Choose buns that are soft and fluffy. You can also use slider buns or Hawaiian rolls.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings: Sloppy joes are traditionally served with chips or fries. However, you can also serve them with other toppings such as coleslaw, potato salad, or baked beans.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a classic comfort food that is perfect for a quick and easy meal. They are also a great way to use up leftover ground beef. With a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious and satisfying sloppy joe sandwich. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy meal, give sloppy joes a try. You won't be disappointed.
