Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Look for small, firm red potatoes that are about 1-2 inches in diameter. Avoid potatoes that are too large, as they will not cook evenly.
  • Wash the potatoes thoroughly: Scrub the potatoes clean under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Boil the potatoes until tender: Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Drain the potatoes and let them cool slightly: Remove the potatoes from the pot and drain them in a colander. Let them cool slightly so that you can handle them without burning yourself.
  • Smash the potatoes: Use a potato masher or the back of a fork to smash the potatoes until they are mostly flattened. You should still have some chunks of potato remaining.
  • Season the potatoes: Add your desired seasonings to the potatoes, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or chili powder. You can also add fresh herbs, such as rosemary or thyme.
  • Heat the oil or butter in a skillet: Heat the oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil or butter is hot, add the potatoes and cook them for 5-7 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve the potatoes immediately: Serve the smashed red potatoes hot, garnished with fresh parsley or chives.

Conclusion:

Smashed red potatoes are a delicious and easy side dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for a weeknight meal, a potluck, or a holiday dinner.
