FALL FRUIT CRUMBLE

Yield Makes 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries
2 firm-ripe pears such as Bartlett, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 apples such as Gala, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 cup sugar, divided
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter, softened

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425°F with rack in middle.
  • Stir together fruits, 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla and place in a buttered shallow 2-quart baking dish.
  • Stir together oats, flour, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Blend in butter with your fingertips until mixture forms small clumps. Scatter over fruit and bake until juices are bubbling and topping is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the right fruit: Use a variety of fruits that are in season and have a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Some good choices include apples, pears, berries, and plums.
  • Don't overfill the crumble: The crumble topping should be about 1 inch thick. If you overfill the crumble, it will be difficult to cook through and the fruit will be too soft.
  • Bake the crumble until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling: This usually takes about 30-40 minutes. If you are using a glass baking dish, you may need to bake the crumble for a few minutes longer.
  • Let the crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving: This will allow the crumble to set and the fruit to thicken.
  • Serve the crumble with a dollop of whipped cream, ice cream, or custard: This will make the crumble even more delicious.

Conclusion:

Autumn crumble is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With a variety of fruits and a crispy oat topping, this crumble is sure to be a hit with everyone. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy dessert, give autumn crumble a try.
