Categories     appetizer

Time 15m

Yield 24 balls, up to 4 servings, 6 balls each

Number Of Ingredients 14

4 scallions, green and white parts, coarsely chopped
2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
1 serrano or jalapeno chili pepper, seeded and finely chopped, divided
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 cup tamari, plus 3 tablespoons, dark soy, found on the international aisle
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, a big handful
2 limes, zest and juice
1/2 pound medium shrimp, shelled and deveined, tails removed
1 pound ground pork
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
1 tablespoon honey
3 tablespoons water
Toothpicks

Steps:

  • In the bowl of a food processor combine the scallions, half of the ginger - grated or minced, half of the chopped chile pepper, garlic, 3 tablespoons tamari, cilantro and the lime zest. Pulse for 30 seconds, scrape down the bowl and then continue to process 1 minute or until finely ground. Add the shrimp and pork, process until the shrimp are ground into small pieces and the mixture is well combined but not so fine that it becomes a paste, about 1 minute. Roll the shrimp and pork mixture into to 24 balls, about the size of a large walnut. If you dip your hands in water before rolling the mixture the rolling goes a little easier.
  • Preheat a large nonstick skillet with 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the balls and don't move them until they are brown on 1 side, about 2 minutes. Turn the balls and continue to cook, browning on all sides until cooked through, about 4 minutes.
  • While the balls are cooking make the spicy lime dipping sauce: in a bowl combine the remaining ginger, chili pepper, 1/2 cup tamari, lime juice, toasted sesame oil, honey and 3 tablespoons (a splash) of water. Taste and adjust the seasoning, if you find it to be too salty, add another drizzle of honey.
  • Platter the shrimp and pork balls with a bowl of the spicy lime dipping sauce and toothpicks.

Serve over steamed white rice. (One reviewer said that they substituted ground beef for the pork/veal and it turned out great that way too.)

ASIAN MEATBALLS WITH SPICY LIME DIPPING SAUCE

Asian Meatballs With Spicy Lime Dipping Sauce image

This is a Rachael Ray recipe. I use what I have on had and leave out the food processor step. She also cooks the meatballs in oil while I bake them at 350 for 20 minutes. I'm posting the recipe as she did. I served mine on a bead of sesame noodles (recipes are on zaar) with dipping sauce on the side. This was so good.

Time 15m

Yield 24 meatballs, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 scallions, coarsely chopped (green and white parts)
fresh ginger (2-inch piece peeled and grated or finely chopped)
1/4 red bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 serrano peppers or 1 jalapepano chili pepper, seeded and finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
3 tablespoons dark soy sauce, such as tamari
1/3 cup dark soy sauce, such as tamari
2 -3 tablespoons cilantro leaves
2 limes (zest and juice of 2 limes)
1 lb ground sirloin
3 -4 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
1 tablespoon honey

Steps:

  • In the bowl of a food processor, combine the scallions, half of the ginger, the bell pepper, half of the chile pepper, the garlic, the 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, the cilantro leaves and the lime zest. Pulse for 30 seconds, scrape down the bowl and process 1 minute more, or until finely ground. Add the meat and process until well combined, about 30 seconds more. Roll the meat into 24 balls the size of walnuts.
  • Preheat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Add the meatballs and don't move them until they are brown on 1 side, about 2 minutes. Turn the meatballs and continue to cook, browning them on all sides, until cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  • While the meatballs cook, make the dipping sauce. In a bowl, combine the remaining ginger and chile pepper, the 1/3 cup of soy sauce, the lime juice, the sesame oil, the honey and a splash of water. Taste and adjust the seasoning; if it's too salty, add another drizzle of honey. Place the finished meatballs on a serving platter, with toothpicks on the side. Serve with the spicy lime dipping sauce.
  • Note: I've made these without the bell pepper, chile and cilantro and they are still flavorful and delicious.

Tips:

  • Choose the right meat: Ground pork or chicken are traditional choices for Asian meatballs, but you can also use beef, lamb, or turkey.
  • Use fresh, flavorful ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will make a big difference in the taste of your meatballs. Be sure to use fresh herbs, spices, and vegetables.
  • Don't overmix the meatball mixture: Overmixing can make the meatballs tough. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Shape the meatballs into uniform balls: This will help them cook evenly.
  • Pan-fry or bake the meatballs: You can cook Asian meatballs either in a pan or in the oven. If you're pan-frying them, be sure to use a nonstick skillet and cook over medium heat.
  • Make the dipping sauce ahead of time: The dipping sauce can be made up to 2 days in advance. This will give the flavors time to meld.

Conclusion:

These Asian meatballs with spicy lime dipping sauce are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or main course. The meatballs are packed with flavor, and the dipping sauce is the perfect complement. Whether you're serving them at a party or enjoying them as a family meal, these meatballs are sure to be a hit.
