ASIAN MEATBALLS (AS A SIDE DISH)

Asian Meatballs (As a Side Dish) image

A wonderfully easy side dish to compliment an Asian meal. (Uses store bought meatballs.) got the idea from another recipe here, and changed it to my tastes. I made lots of sauce and after I removed the meatballs from it I used it in a stir fry, so I only used 1 bag of meatballs. I'm sure homemade meatballs would be better if you have the time. It would be so easy to just heat up the meatballs in a purchased stir fry sauce too.

Time 20m

Yield 32 1 oz meatballs, 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 (16 ounce) bags precooked frozen meatballs
3 cups water
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup honey
1/8 cup honey-flavored barbecue sauce
1/8 cup lemon juice
1/8 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon sake
1 tablespoon mirin
1/3-1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup cornstarch

Steps:

  • Pour all ingredients (except the meatballs) into a pot, stir well to combine. Bring to a full boil, making sure that the cornstarch is incorporated before the liquid heats up.
  • Add the meatballs. Bring back to a simmer, reduce heat and cook until warmed through, 10-15 minutes.
  • I let mine cook for an hour and a half over low heat, since you can't really overcook them. You just need to stir the pot occasionally to make sure the sauce doesn't stick.

Tips:

  • Choose the right meat: Ground pork or beef are classic choices, but you can also use chicken, turkey, or lamb. If using leaner meats, add some bread crumbs or panko to help keep the meatballs moist.
  • Season the meatballs well: Use a combination of herbs, spices, and aromatics to flavor the meatballs. Common ingredients include garlic, ginger, onion, green onions, cilantro, lemongrass, and chili peppers.
  • Don't overmix the meatball mixture: Overmixing can make the meatballs tough. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Use a light touch when forming the meatballs: Gently roll the meatball mixture into balls, taking care not to pack them too tightly.
  • Cook the meatballs thoroughly: Make sure the meatballs are cooked through before serving. You can cook them in a variety of ways, such as pan-frying, baking, or steaming.

Conclusion:

Asian meatballs are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a little creativity, you can create a unique and flavorful meatball dish that will impress your family and friends.
