1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
1/2 cup warm whole milk (110° to 115°)
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon salt
3-3/4 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
FILLING:
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 tablespoons butter, melted, divided
2/3 cup apricot preserves
3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, butter, sugar, eggs and salt; mix well. Add 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. I submitted this pretty bread to a 4-H competition more than 12 years ago and was named Grand Champion. Since then, it's earned honors for my Grandma Catherine and six of my cousins. We consider this a true family recipe!

3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
2 eggs
FILLING:
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup apricot preserves
Vanilla Glaze
Slivered almonds, toasted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast and salt. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter to 120°-130°. Add to dry ingredients; beat until moistened. Add eggs; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on high for 3 minutes. Stir in remaining flour; beat well. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
