Quick & easy to make. You can have the batter whipped up in the amount of time it takes for the oil to heat. (I use a Fry Daddy.) We actually like them better after they sit for 5-6 hours rather than warm like most doughnuts I make.

Time 20m

Yield 28 1 ounce doughnuts

Number Of Ingredients 13

3 tablespoons butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2-3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
1/4-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
1/4 cup milk or 1/4 cup buttermilk
oil (for frying)
sugar

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Beat in applesauce and vanilla.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk (batter will be extremely thick). In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat oil to 375°F.
  • Drop teaspoonfuls of batter a few at a time into hot oil.
  • Turn with a slotted spoon and fry until golden, about 1 minute on each side. Drain on paper towels; roll in sugar while warm.

Tips:

  • Use fresh applesauce for the best flavor and texture. If you don't have fresh applesauce, you can use unsweetened canned applesauce, but be sure to drain it well before using.
  • If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup of regular milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Be sure to heat the oil to the correct temperature before frying the doughnuts. If the oil is too hot, the doughnuts will brown too quickly on the outside and be raw on the inside. If the oil is not hot enough, the doughnuts will absorb too much oil and be greasy.
  • Fry the doughnuts in small batches so that they don't overcrowd the pan. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar while they are still warm. This will help the sugar stick to the doughnuts.

Conclusion:

These applesauce drop doughnuts are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are soft and fluffy on the inside, with a crispy outer shell and a sweet and tangy applesauce flavor. Whether you serve them for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, these doughnuts are sure to be a hit.
