CREAMY AU GRATIN POTATOES

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes image

This is my husband's favorite dish, and he considers it a special occasion every time I make it. The creamy cheese sauce and the tender potatoes in this classic French dish combine to make a deliciously addictive experience. It's a great side dish with a roast pork loin or beef tenderloin. Add a green salad and French bread, and you have found the magic path to a man's heart. To avoid lumps in your sauce, add the milk just a little at a time as you stir the flour and butter. Experiment with different cheeses for variety.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart-sweet apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for baking. They hold their shape well and have a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and quickly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When arranging the apples in the baking dish, make sure they are not touching each other. This will allow them to brown evenly.
  • Bake the apples until they are tender: This will usually take about 20-30 minutes. You can check for doneness by inserting a knife into the center of an apple. If the knife goes in easily, the apples are done.
  • Serve the apples chaud: Apples au gratin are best served warm from the oven. You can top them with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion:

Apples au gratin are a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for a special occasion or a weeknight treat. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a dish that is both elegant and satisfying. So next time you're looking for a dessert that is sure to impress, give apples au gratin a try.
