I had these at a graduation party and they were wonderful. I was shocked when they told me the ingredients. I've made them ever since and they always go like hot cakes! Either hand roll meatballs using your favorite meatball recipe or purchase frozen prepared meatballs. If you use frozen, allow for more simmering time.

GRANDMA'S APPLESAUCE MEATBALLS

Grandma's Applesauce Meatballs image

This is one of my family's favorite 'comfort' foods - by all six generations. Don't let the applesauce scare you off; you can't taste it, but it keeps the meatballs tender and moist. Add mushrooms and/or pearl onions for an even heartier 'comfort' meal! Serve over hot buttered noodles or rice. We like a salad and garlic bread, or a plate of sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. Enjoy!

Time 1h35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup applesauce
1 egg
1 cup bread crumbs
½ teaspoon salt and pepper to taste
1 pound ground beef
flour
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced
2 onions, thinly sliced
3 cups tomato juice

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  • Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high or high heat. Cook meatballs, turning occasionally, until evenly browned but not cooked through. Transfer to a baking dish and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, partially cook the carrots and onions over medium high heat. Add tomato juice, season to taste with salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes, then pour over meatballs.
  • Cook, covered, in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until carrots are tender and meatballs are cooked through. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes before removing from the oven.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples. For this recipe, you'll want to use a firm, tart apple like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These apples will hold their shape when cooked and add a nice tartness to the meatballs.
  • Don't overcook the meatballs. Overcooked meatballs will be tough and dry. Cook them just until they are cooked through, about 10 minutes per side.
  • Make sure the sauce is thick enough. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the meatballs and hold them together. If the sauce is too thin, add a little cornstarch or flour to thicken it.
  • Serve the meatballs hot. Apple spice meatballs are best served hot, right out of the oven. You can serve them with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish.

Conclusion:

Apple spice meatballs are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for fall. The meatballs are made with ground beef, apples, breadcrumbs, and spices. They are then cooked in a sweet and tangy sauce. These meatballs are sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
