APPLE BROWN BETTY

Apple Brown Betty image

My mother made this all through my childhood. It's lighter and crunchier than a cobbler. She made her own bread crumbs by drying the bread in a low oven until crispy and running it through the food processor. They could also be broken into small pieces and cut up smaller with a knife. More simply, store-bought unseasoned bread crumbs are a fine substitution.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples. For this recipe, a good all-purpose apple like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp works well. You can also use a mix of different types of apples, such as Pink Lady, Braeburn, or Jonagold.
  • Peel and core the apples thinly. This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcook the apples. You want them to be tender but still hold their shape. Cook them for about 10 minutes, or until they are just starting to soften.
  • Use a good quality pumpkin purée. Make sure it is smooth and free of any lumps. You can use canned pumpkin purée or make your own by roasting a pumpkin and then puréeing it in a food processor.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices. This recipe calls for cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, but you can also add other spices like cloves, allspice, or cardamom.
  • Serve the Apple Pumpkin Brown Betty warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Conclusion:

Apple Pumpkin Brown Betty is a classic fall dessert that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. The combination of apples, pumpkin, and spices is warm and comforting, and the breadcrumb topping adds a delicious crunch. This recipe is also a great way to use up leftover pumpkin purée.
