Provided by Nancy Fuller

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
Four 1-inch thick ham steaks, cut from a whole boneless ham
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 Granny Smith apple, chopped
1 small yellow onion, chopped
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • For the ham steaks: Heat the oil on a cast-iron griddle over medium-high heat. Add the ham steaks and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 4 minutes per side.
  • For the apple-mustard chutney: Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the apple and onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, mustard seeds and some salt and pepper. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Serve the chutney over the ham steaks.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Ham: Select a fully cooked bone-in ham for the best flavor and texture. Hams come in a variety of sizes, so choose one that will feed your guests comfortably.
  • Enhance the Glaze: Feel free to customize the mustard glaze to your liking. You can add a touch of honey or brown sugar for sweetness, or a dash of cayenne pepper for a bit of heat.
  • Score the Ham: Scoring the ham before baking helps the glaze penetrate the meat and creates a more flavorful crust. Make sure to score the ham deeply, but not all the way through.
  • Slow and Steady Cooking: Bake the ham at a low temperature for a longer period of time to ensure even cooking. This will prevent the ham from drying out and becoming tough.
  • Glaze Regularly: Baste the ham with the glaze every 15-20 minutes during baking. This will keep the ham moist and prevent it from burning.
  • Rest Before Serving: Once the ham is cooked, let it rest for 15-20 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more tender and flavorful ham.

Conclusion:

Apple Mustard Glazed Ham is a delightful dish that combines the sweet and tangy flavors of apples and mustard. It's perfect for special occasions, such as Easter or Christmas, but it's also a great option for a weeknight dinner. With its simple ingredients and easy preparation, this recipe is sure to become a family favorite. Serve it with roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a crisp salad for a complete meal that everyone will enjoy.
