Indulge in the tantalizing world of apple crumb squares, a delectable treat that harmonizes the flavors of sweet, tangy apples and a buttery, crumbly topping. This article presents two enticing recipes that cater to different dietary preferences: a classic apple crumb square recipe and a gluten-free version for those with dietary restrictions.
The classic apple crumb square recipe embodies the traditional flavors of this beloved dessert. It features a flaky pie crust filled with a generous helping of sautéed apples, kissed with cinnamon and sugar, and topped with a golden-brown crumb mixture. The gluten-free apple crumb square recipe offers an equally delightful experience, utilizing a gluten-free flour blend to accommodate those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Steps:
- For the base and streusel topping: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter the bottom of an 8-inch-square baking pan.
- Put the flour, oats, sugars, baking soda and salt in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse 6 times, about 3 seconds per pulse, until some of the oatmeal is finely chopped and some still large or whole. Drizzle in the melted butter, toss with a fork and then pulse until the mixture comes together, about 8 times.
- Press two-thirds of the oat mixture into the prepared pan. Squeeze spoonfuls of the remaining mixture in your palm to make chunks - some larger, some smaller - and place in a small bowl.
- Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate both the base and the chunks for 30 minutes.
- For the filling: Put the apple butter, dried fruit, cinnamon and 2 tablespoons water in the cleaned bowl of the food processor and pulse to a chunky paste. Spread the filling over the chilled base. Scatter the streusel topping over the filling, leaving some of the filling showing through. Bake until the streusel is toasty and crisp, about 30 minutes. Cool completely on a rack, about 2 hours, before slicing into 16 squares.

Tips:
- Use a variety of apples. This will give your squares a more complex flavor and texture. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples.
- Don't overmix the dough. Overmixing will make the dough tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
- Chill the dough before baking. This will help the dough to hold its shape and prevent it from spreading too much in the oven.
- Bake the squares until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This will ensure that the squares are cooked through.
- Let the squares cool completely before cutting them. This will help to prevent them from falling apart.
Conclusion:
Apple crumb squares are a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With a flaky crust, a sweet and tangy apple filling, and a crunchy crumb topping, these squares are sure to be a hit.
