OVEN-DRIED CINNAMON-SUGAR APPLE PEEL CHIPS

Oven-Dried Cinnamon-Sugar Apple Peel Chips image

While making a large pot of applesauce, I chose not to discard the nutrient-rich peels but instead bake them into apple chips. It turned out to be an deliciously successful experiment. These apple chips are lightly sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar and oven-dried on parchment paper. To ensure even drying, it's important to make sure the peels are of equal/uniform thickness. Thicker peels will take longer to dry, and you need them to be completely dry for food safety reasons. For best results, use a counter-mounted spiral apple peeler; or just keep an even hand while peeling your apples. My family enjoyed these crispy treats, and I hope yours does too!

Apple Pie Dip & With Cinnamon Pita Chips Recipe - (4.3/5) image

Provided by KimberlySeverino

Number Of Ingredients 5

● 2 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples
● 2 tbsp. lemon juice
● 3 tbsp. brown sugar
● 1/4 tsp cinnamon
● 1 tsp cornstarch dissolved in 1 tsp water

Steps:

  • 1. Combine all the dip ingredients in a small pan except the cornstarch-water mixture. 2. Heat for a few minutes until it's boiling and has extracted juice from the apple. 3. Add cornstarch-water mixture to the "sauce" 4. Put back on the stove until boiling and the sauce has thickened. 5. You can serve this warm or chilled, with Cinnamon sugar pita chips

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your chips a more complex flavor and texture. Good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Braeburn.
  • Slice the apples thinly. This will help them crisp up in the oven. Aim for slices that are about 1/8-inch thick.
  • Toss the apples with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. This will give them a sweet and spicy flavor.
  • Spread the apples in a single layer on a baking sheet. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Bake the apples for 1-2 hours, or until they are crispy. Be sure to flip them halfway through the cooking time.
  • Let the apples cool completely before storing them. This will help them keep their crisp texture.
