Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 c whole milk or thin cream
1/4 c butter
2/3 to 1 c sugar (white or brown, i use white)
3 eggs
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla
3 c bread, torn into small pieces
1/2 c raisins, optional

Steps:

  • 1. In a medium saucepan, heat milk until film forms over top. Add butter and stir until butter melts. Cool to lukewarm.
  • 2. Beat together sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Continue beating and gradually add milk mixture.
  • 3. Place torn bread in a buttered 1 1/2 quart casserole dish. Sprinkle with raisins, if using. Pour milk mixture on top of bread. Bake at 350* for 50 minutes to one hour. Serve warm either plain or with whipped cream or caramel sauce.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality bread: Fresh or slightly stale bread works best for bread pudding. Avoid using bread that is too dry or moldy.
  • Choose your bread wisely: Different types of bread will yield different textures in your bread pudding. For a denser pudding, use a hearty bread like sourdough or whole wheat. For a lighter pudding, use a white bread or brioche.
  • Don't overbeat the eggs: Overbeaten eggs will make your bread pudding tough. Beat them just until they are combined.
  • Soak the bread cubes in the custard mixture: This will help the bread to absorb the custard and prevent it from becoming dry.
  • Bake the bread pudding in a water bath: This will help to create a moist and evenly cooked pudding.
  • Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving: This will help it to set and make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Amish bread pudding is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is a great way to use up leftover bread, and it can be customized to your liking with different spices, fruits, or nuts. Whether you are a fan of traditional Amish cooking or just looking for a new dessert to try, Amish bread pudding is sure to please.
