AMERICAN CHOP SUEY

This is a quick recipe using 'canned' spaghetti. We always ate in on Friday nights before we would go to the football games. It is also excellent when served the next day, as the flavors have a chance to mix.

Yield Serves 8

Number Of Ingredients 15

3 tablespoons butter
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Kosher salt
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (14.5-ounce) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup tomato paste
2/3 cup tomato juice
Pinch of sugar
1 pound elbow macaroni

Steps:

  • 1. Heat the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute. Then add the ground beef and continue to cook, stirring and breaking up the chunks of meat with a spoon. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, about 7 minutes. Sprinkle the herbs and pepper over the meat, add salt to taste, and mix in well.
  • 2. Add the canned tomatoes with their juices, the tomato sauce, paste, and juice. Add sugar to taste. Simmer while you cook the pasta.
  • 3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Drain. Mix the macaroni into the chop suey. Serve hot.

Tips:

  • Use fresh and flavorful ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will greatly impact the taste of your American chop suey pasta shells with meat. Use fresh vegetables, lean ground beef, and a flavorful tomato sauce.
  • Cook the pasta shells al dente: Al dente pasta is slightly firm to the bite and will hold its shape better in the dish.
  • Brown the ground beef well: Browning the ground beef will help to develop its flavor and prevent it from becoming dry.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: The more vegetables you use, the more nutritious and flavorful your dish will be. Some good choices include carrots, celery, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms.
  • Season the dish to taste: Start with a basic seasoning of salt and pepper, then add additional seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or chili powder, to taste.
  • Serve the dish hot: American chop suey pasta shells with meat is best served hot, right out of the pan.

Conclusion:

American chop suey pasta shells with meat is a quick and easy one-pot meal that is perfect for busy weeknights. It is a hearty and flavorful dish that the whole family will enjoy. The combination of pasta, ground beef, vegetables, and tomato sauce is sure to please everyone at the table.
