MICHAEL'S BEST BUTTON MUSHROOMS

Categories     side-dish

Time 40m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/2 pounds whole small button mushrooms, wiped clean
3 tablespoons butter
Gray sea salt
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup white wine
1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, heat the oil over high heat. Add the mushrooms. Do not move the mushrooms until they have caramelized on the bottom. If you toss them too soon, they will release their liquid and begin to steam. When the bottoms are caramelized, toss them and continue to cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the butter. Cook and toss for 5 minutes, until beautifully browned.
  • Season with salt and add the garlic. Saute another 2 minutes, and add the thyme, lemon juice, and white wine. Cook to evaporate the liquid.
  • Toss in the parsley and serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Mushrooms: Select fresh, firm, and unblemished button mushrooms. Avoid any that are slimy or have dark spots.
  • Clean the Mushrooms Properly: Gently wipe the mushrooms with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any dirt or debris. Do not soak them in water, as this can make them soggy.
  • Slice or Chop Evenly: For even cooking, slice or chop the mushrooms uniformly. This will help them cook at the same rate.
  • Use High Heat for Searing: When searing button mushrooms, use high heat to quickly brown the exterior while keeping the inside tender.
  • Add Aromatics for Flavor: Enhance the flavor of your button mushrooms by sautéing them with aromatic ingredients like garlic, onions, shallots, or herbs.
  • Season Generously: Don't be afraid to season your button mushrooms generously. Salt, pepper, and other spices can bring out their natural umami flavor.
  • Cook Until Tender: Cook the button mushrooms until they are tender but still have a slight bite to them. Overcooking can make them rubbery.

Conclusion:

Button mushrooms are a versatile and delicious ingredient that can be enjoyed in various dishes. With their mild flavor and meaty texture, they can be used in everything from soups and stews to stir-fries and pasta dishes. Whether you are a seasoned cook or just starting, these amazing button mushroom recipes will surely impress your taste buds. So, gather your ingredients, follow the step-by-step instructions, and create mouthwatering meals that will make your family and friends ask for seconds.
