Time 45m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
2 cups whole milk
8 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese
4 ounces shredded Swiss cheese
4 ounces Velveeta® processed cheese
½ cup panko bread crumbs

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook elbow macaroni in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 8 minutes. Drain.
  • Melt the butter in the bottom of an oven-proof fry pan. Add the flour and stir over heat until just beginning to brown - don't let it get too brown. Take it off the heat and stir in about 1 cup of milk until the butter and flour mixture is fully incorporated. Put it back on the heat and simmer until just beginning to thicken, about 5 minutes. Add the rest of the milk; stir to fully incorporate.
  • Add all of the cheeses and stir to melt. Once melted, add the cooked macaroni. Stir to mix.
  • Cover the top of the mac and cheese with panko crumbs and place the pan in the oven. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until it is bubbling and the bread crumbs are slightly browned.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality cheese. The type of cheese you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your macaroni and cheese. Use a cheese that melts well and has a strong flavor, such as cheddar, Gruyère, or Parmesan.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente. Macaroni that is cooked too soft will become mushy in the macaroni and cheese. Cook the macaroni according to the package directions, but test it a minute or two before the recommended cooking time is up to make sure it is still slightly firm.
  • Make a roux. A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that is used to thicken the cheese sauce. A roux will help to prevent the cheese sauce from becoming too thin and watery.
  • Use milk or cream. Milk or cream will help to make the cheese sauce smooth and creamy. You can use whole milk, 2%, or even skim milk. If you use cream, use heavy cream or half-and-half.
  • Add other ingredients to taste. You can add other ingredients to your macaroni and cheese to taste, such as cooked bacon, diced ham, chopped vegetables, or breadcrumbs.

Conclusion:

Macaroni and cheese is a classic comfort food that is loved by people of all ages. It is a versatile dish that can be made with a variety of different ingredients. Whether you like it simple or loaded with add-ins, there is a macaroni and cheese recipe out there for everyone.
