Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 pound lean ground beef
3 cloves garlic (minced)
Salt & freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
3 cups marinara sauce (homemade OR 1 (24-ounce) store-bought jar)
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon dried basil
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1-2 teaspoons sugar (optional)
3 cups beef broth
8 ounces spaghetti noodles (broken in half)
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional) (for serving)
Fresh minced parsley (optional) (for serving)
Crushed red pepper flakes (optional) (for serving)

Steps:

  • Set a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, breaking apart and stirring as the meat cooks. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute or two until fragrant.
  • Drain the grease from the pot and season the beef with salt and pepper, to taste. Add the marinara sauce, tomato paste, balsamic vinegar, dried basil, dried oregano, dried thyme, sugar (if using), and beef broth. Stir well to combine, bring to a boil, and then reduce heat to a low simmer (about medium-low).
  • Lay the broken spaghetti noodles on top of the sauce, criss-crossing them and pressing them down until submerged by liquid. Do not stir at this point.
  • Cover and cook, stirring every 5 minutes, until the excess liquid is absorbed and the pasta is al dente, about 15 to 20 minutes total (see NOTES below).
  • Stir well and serve immediately, topped with plenty of Parmesan cheese.

ONE-PAN PASTA

One-Pan Pasta image

It's one of our most popular recipes and for good reason. This is our original one-pot pasta recipe, inspired by a dish one of our food editors ate in Puglia, Italy. All the ingredients cook together in a straight-sided skillet, you don't even need to boil water first-and it's on the table in just 20 minutes.

ALL-IN-ONE SPAGHETTI

All-In-One Spaghetti image

This is an easy, one-pot spaghetti that goes great with a salad and garlic bread. I got this recipe out of Southern Living Magazine, November 1998. Our family loves this recipe because there is plenty of sauce. Also, when you add the uncooked spaghetti noodles to the pot and cook, all the flavors really meld together. It is delicous!

Tips:

  • Use high-quality, Italian-made spaghetti. This will make a big difference in the final dish.
  • Don't overcook the spaghetti. Al dente pasta is the goal, so cook it for just a few minutes less than the package directions indicate.
  • Save some of the pasta cooking water. This can be used to thin out the sauce or to add moisture to the dish.
  • Use a good quality olive oil. This will add flavor and richness to the sauce.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different ingredients. You can add vegetables, meats, or seafood to this dish to make it your own.
