Read the write up for more helpful info. Make sure you have a air fryer large enough to cook a whole chicken. Most chickens average 3-5 pounds, with 5 pounds being the max. Don't buy a chicken that rests too high above your basket or too close to the heating element. If your chicken is too large and close to the heating element, it will burn on the outside and not cook completely in the center

AIR FRYER WHOLE CHICKEN

Air Fryer Whole Chicken image

Yes, you can do a whole roast chicken in the air fryer! This handy appliance does a great job on most proteins. As long as you adjust the size chicken to the air fryer capacity, it will turn out great! I love to use butter and mixed fresh herbs to prepare chicken. Dried herbs may be used, but you'll use far less, due to the concentrated flavor of the dried herbs. We enjoy this lovely roast chicken with simple potatoes and vegetables, and perhaps a green salad.

Time 1h20m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (5 pound) whole chicken
8 sprigs fresh rosemary, divided
4 sprigs fresh sage
4 sprigs fresh oregano
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided

Steps:

  • Pat chicken dry, inside and out, with paper towels. Remove giblets, trim away any excess fat, and discard.
  • Tie 4 sprigs rosemary, sage, and oregano together into an herb bundle with string. Bundle should be about 1/2-inch in diameter. Set aside.
  • Combine salt and pepper in a small bowl. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon seasoning mixture inside the cavity of the chicken and place the herb bundle inside.
  • Gently loosen the skin over the breasts and thighs. Insert 1 teaspoon butter and 1 sprig of rosemary beneath the skin of each breast and thigh. Using your fingertips, rub butter all over the skin of the chicken, and place any excess butter inside the cavity of the chicken.
  • Sprinkle remaining seasoning mixture over the entire chicken. Place in the air fryer basket, breast-side down.
  • Air-fry at 370 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 45 minutes. Using tongs, carefully flip the chicken, breast-side up, and continue to air-fry until skin is crisp and brown, 15 more minutes.
  • Tent aluminum foil over the chicken and allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of one of the thighs should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C). If needed, return to the air fryer and cook in 5-minute increments until safe temperature is achieved.
  • To serve, remove herb bundle and carve.

AIR FRYER ROAST CHICKEN

Air Fryer Roast Chicken image

We love the air fryer for all sorts of items, but we love it best for cooking a whole chicken. The skin renders and gets perfectly crispy while the inside stays incredibly moist and flavorful.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 1h5m

Yield 2 to 3 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

Nonstick cooking spray, for the basket
1 small chicken (3 to 3 1/2 pounds)
1 tablespoon olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 sprigs fresh rosemary, thyme, sage or a combination
1 head garlic, cut in half to expose all the cloves
1/2 lemon

Steps:

  • Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 370 degrees F and spray the basket with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Rub the outside of the chicken with the olive oil.
  • Sprinkle the chicken inside and outside with 1 tablespoon salt and several grinds of pepper. Fill the cavity with the herbs, garlic and lemon. Put the chicken in the basket breast-side up, pushing it down so it does not touch the top of the fryer.
  • Roast the chicken until it is golden and crispy and an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh, avoiding bone, reads 165 degrees F, 50 to 60 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right chicken: Select a whole chicken that is between 3 and 4 pounds. A larger chicken may not fit in your air fryer, and a smaller chicken may not cook evenly.
  • Pat the chicken dry: This will help the skin crisp up. You can use paper towels to pat the chicken dry.
  • Season the chicken generously: Use a variety of seasonings, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. You can also use a store-bought chicken seasoning blend.
  • Drizzle the chicken with olive oil: This will help the skin crisp up and prevent the chicken from drying out.
  • Cook the chicken at a high temperature: This will help the skin crisp up and the meat cook evenly. The ideal temperature for cooking whole chicken in an air fryer is 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the chicken for the proper amount of time: The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the chicken. A 3-pound chicken will typically take about 60 minutes to cook, while a 4-pound chicken will take about 75 minutes.
  • Let the chicken rest before carving: This will help the juices redistribute throughout the chicken, resulting in more tender meat.

Conclusion:

Cooking a whole chicken in an air fryer is a quick and easy way to get a delicious, crispy meal. With a little bit of preparation, you can have a perfectly cooked chicken that the whole family will enjoy. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal, give air fryer whole chicken a try.
