CHICKEN JERKY FOR DOGS

Chicken Jerky for Dogs image

You can dehydrate your own chicken for you dogs at a fraction of the cost of commercial chicken jerky. I found the method on expertvillage.com. Edited to add: Well, here's a great example why you shouldn't make a recipe public until after you've tried it. I've now made the recipe (after it was reviewed and found to be in need of a much longer cooking time) and the instructions have now been corrected. Note: Regarding garlic and dogs: Many dogs enjoy the taste of garlic and it's a natural flea repellent. A small bit of cooked garlic should not be toxic. However, according to the American Animal Hospital Association, raw and spoiled garlic is toxic and potentially fatal to dogs. Consult with your veterinarian before using and use in small quantities.

Time 2h5m

Yield 7-8 slices

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 cooked boneless chicken breast
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 200°F.
  • Slice the chicken into thin strips. You should end up with about 7 or 8 slices.
  • Place chicken slices on a baking sheet and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours to remove moisture (cooking time will depend on thickness of chicken and whether chicken is refrigerated or warm from oven. I baked raw chicken until no longer pink then allowed it to cool enough to be handled before slicing into strips).
  • Allow to cool.

Tips:

  • Choose lean chicken breast or thigh meat for your jerky. This will help to ensure that the jerky is low in fat and calories.
  • Cut the chicken into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick. This will help the jerky to cook evenly and quickly.
  • Marinate the chicken in a mixture of soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. This will help to infuse the jerky with flavor.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the ideal temperature for making chicken jerky.
  • Cook the chicken jerky in the air fryer for 30-45 minutes, or until it is dry and crispy. Be sure to flip the jerky halfway through the cooking time.
  • Let the chicken jerky cool completely before storing it. Once it is cool, it can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Conclusion:

Making chicken jerky in an air fryer is a quick, easy, and healthy way to provide your dog with a delicious and nutritious treat. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a batch of homemade chicken jerky that your dog will love.
