Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

Tips:

  • Choose the right type of onion: Yellow onions are the most common type used for onion rings, but you can also use white or red onions. Sweet onions, such as Vidalia or Walla Walla, can also be used for a milder flavor.
  • Cut the onions evenly: This will help them cook evenly. If the onion rings are too thick, they will not cook through properly. If they are too thin, they will become crispy and overcooked.
  • Use a sharp knife: A sharp knife will make it easier to cut the onions evenly and prevent them from tearing.
  • Soak the onion rings in milk: This will help to tenderize the onions and make them less likely to fall apart when you are frying them.
  • Use a light batter: A heavy batter will make the onion rings greasy and soggy. A light batter will allow the onions to shine through.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When you are frying the onion rings, don't overcrowd the pan. This will cause the oil temperature to drop and the onion rings will not cook evenly.
  • Serve the onion rings hot: Onion rings are best served hot and crispy. If you are making them ahead of time, reheat them in the oven before serving.

Conclusion:

Onion rings are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of main courses. They are easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. Whether you like them crispy or soft, thick or thin, there is an onion ring recipe out there for you.
