COPPER PENNIES

I know, there are Copper Pennies all over the place. This is a tad different than the others, but very similar. They must be good to have so many recipes. Really, they are good; they make a great side dish at a picnic or cookout. They are served cold and go with anything. When I make them, I share them with my daughter as she loves them, too. It is a great way to get your carotene.

Time 1h20m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 lbs carrots (peeled and sliced)
1 green pepper (thinly sliced)
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can tomato soup
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup cooking oil
3/4 cup vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Cook carrots till done; drain and rinse.
  • Put the carrots, green pepper, and onion in a bowl.
  • In a saucepan mix together the tomato soup, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Bring to a boil, stirring until thoroughly blended.
  • Pour over veggies and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and better for a few hours.

Tips:

  • Select the right pennies: Use genuine copper pennies minted before 1982. Newer pennies are made of copper-plated zinc and won't work for this experiment.
  • Clean the pennies: Wash the pennies thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris. This will help the vinegar solution work more effectively. If the pennies are heavily tarnished, you can soak them in a vinegar solution overnight before cleaning them.
  • Use a glass jar: A clear glass jar will allow you to observe the color changes that occur during the experiment. Make sure the jar is large enough to hold all of the pennies and the vinegar solution.
  • Cover the jar tightly: The vinegar fumes can be strong, so it's important to cover the jar tightly to prevent the smell from escaping. You can use a lid, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil to seal the jar.
  • Be patient: The color change process can take up to 24 hours, so be patient and don't disturb the jar. You can check on the pennies periodically to see how the color is changing.

Conclusion:

This simple and educational experiment demonstrates the chemical reaction between copper and vinegar. The vinegar solution dissolves the copper oxide on the surface of the pennies, revealing the shiny copper underneath. This experiment is a fun and easy way to learn about chemistry and is suitable for all ages. It's also a great way to repurpose old pennies that you may have lying around the house.
